The Ontario Blues opened their 2013 season in a winning fashion, earning a resounding 38-23 victory over cross-border rivals New York Athletic Club.
The May 4th contest was held in Travers Island, New York, just north of The Bronx.
By the halftime whistle, Ontario had fallen behind by a score of 13-5, though the squad showed their mettle, outscoring the Americans 33-8 in the second half.
The Blues scored six tries on the day, led by Derek Daypuck’s two-try effort. Seb Pearson, Hank McQueen, Ryan Tomlinson, and Davor Stojanov each added a try, while Liam Underwood tacked on four converts.
NYAC had two tries of their own, along with three penalty goals and two converts.
In the discipline department, Ontario received five yellow cards, compared to New York’s one.
Head coach Chris Silverthorn was pleased with what he saw in the Blues’ first match of the season.
“It was a pretty good first game for us,” he said. “We also got to see a lot of new guys pushing for spots, so the competition level was quite high.”
“It was very constructive exercise for both teams, and I hope to see this developing into something pretty special,” added team manager Mark Winokur.
“Both teams were missing some key guys, so a rematch should push standards even higher,” he said. “We look forward to engaging with NYAC sooner rather than later.”
