SEVEN MEMBERS OF MACTIER CUP-WINNING ONTARIO BLUES SELECTED TO CANADA’S AMERICAS RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP ROSTER
(TORONTO, ON) – Canada Men’s Fifteens head coach Kieran Crowley has announced his 25-man roster for the upcoming 2013 IRB Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) being hosted at the Canadian Rugby Centre of Excellence and Westhills Stadium in Langford, BC on October 11, 15 and 19.
Canada opened last year’s event with a 28-10 victory over Uruguay before defeating their North American rivals, USA 23-3 on Day Two. The two opening victories pitted the hosts against fellow undefeated side, Argentina in the finale of the tournament. However, the South Americans would prevail 28-9 in front of a sold-out crowd of nearly 3,300 fans on the final game day.
The round-robin style tournament, played between Canada, USA, Uruguay and Argentina, is an IRB sanctioned event designed to develop domestic-based players in the Americas.
Members of Canada’s National High Performance Coaching Staff were in attendance at each of the 2013 Canadian Rugby Championship (CRC) games and used the domestic competition to pick this year’s ARC Team.
“The CRC has served its purpose in that it’s getting our best players to play against one another and we get to see them on one level playing field,” said coach Crowley from the Canadian Rugby Centre of Excellence.
“I thought the competition throughout the CRC was really good, it made decisions challenging.”
In this year’s side, seven members of the MacTier Cup Championship-winning Ontario Blues have been selected: Ray Barkwill, Alistair Clark, Jamie Mackenzie, Hank McQueen, Mike Scholz, Jordan Wilson-Ross, and Doug Wooldridge.
Ontario’s representation on the national team does not stop there: Blues head coach Chris Silverthorn has been named as Crowley’s assistant coach, while Blues manager Mark Winokur will manage the national squad.
“The success of the Ontario Blues program is truly recognized by Rugby Canada with the inclusion of seven Blues players on the 2013 ARC team,” says Ontario Blues director Bob McGeein. “It is also a testament to strength of the Blues program to have the organizational abilities of Mark Winokur and the coaching abilities of Chris Silverthorn named to the ARC program.”
“This is the second year that both Mark and Chris have been named to Canada’s ARC squad, and speaks highly of their skills,” added McGeein. “We are all proud of them and wish them well in the upcoming competition.”
“The seven players from our Ontario Blues program that have been chosen to represent our national team is a clear indication of how strong Ontario's rugby program has become,” said Rugby Ontario President Domenic Scuglia. “I am extremely proud to see that Mark Winokur and Chris Silverthorn have been selected to join the national team's staff for a second year in a row, as these two have played major roles in helping to establish Ontario's successful rugby program.”
“On behalf of Rugby Ontario's membership, I wish all of Ontario's representatives and their teammates the best of luck at the upcoming America’s Rugby Championship.”
Ontario Blues players Tom Dolezel and Jake Webster are currently not available for selection to Canada’s Fifteens and Sevens Teams due to injury, while Blues fly-half Liam Underwood is unavailable due to university commitments.
Furthermore, due to the start of the IRB Sevens World Series, Canada’s Sevens athletes will be in Australia during ARC, including Blues players Lucas Hammond and John Moonlight.
