TWELVE ONTARIANS NAMED TO RUGBY CANADA’S MAPLE LEAFS ROSTERS FOR UPCOMING MEN’S & WOMEN’S NACRA SEVENS

Adam Powell, Rugby Canada Communications

LANGFORD, BC - Rugby Canada is pleased to announce the Canada Men’s and Women’s Maple Leafs rosters for the upcoming North American Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) tournament taking place on November 9th and 10th on the Cayman Islands.

The NACRA will be hosting 12 men’s teams and eight women’s teams in what will be a valuable opportunity for the Maple Leafs.

This tournament holds value in more than one form for the Maple Leafs program. Not only is it a prime opportunity to provide younger players the chance for some international experience but also an opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate and identify talent for the Sevens World Series squads.

On the men’s side, Canada Men's Sevens head coach, along with Kieran Crowley, Morgan Williams and Shane Thompson, put together a strong mix of experience and youth. Captained my Lucas Hammond, the team is composed of 12 players, nine of whom have played and won Bronze in the World Games in Cali, Colombia.

Pat Parfrey, Hammond, Pay Kay and Justin Douglas most recently represented Canada in the first leg of the IRB World Sevens Series on the Gold Coast of Australia. The team’s youngest member, Theo Sauder is just 17 and still attending school in Vancouver. The squad has eight players who are 20 or younger and five who are still eligible for next year’s Canada Under-20 team.

This is positive news in the eyes of Rugby Canada because it means the future is bright for the Sevens program. This is an elite opportunity being afforded to young players early in their competitive careers, and with such a heavy focus on development the hope is they will benefit significantly.

The Maple Leafs are being coached by the duo of Williams and Thompson. Both experienced coaches took a side into the recent Victoria Sevens event, while Thompson is at the helm at NACRA and Williams will lead the team in Las Vegas in 2014.

The team will hold a camp in Toronto at Crescent School from November 1-5. They will attend the Canada vs New Zealand Maori All Blacks game at BMO field on November 3rd before eventually catching their flight to the Cayman Islands on November 5th.

Mike Fuailefau was unavailable for selection because of an injured foot, opening up yet another spot for a young player to gain experience.

On the women’s side, Head Coach Sandro Fiorino has also put together a mix of youth and experience. Captained by Jessica Dovanne, the squad will see seven players from the Under-20 program that won Canada’s first Nations Cup Championship dawn the Maple Leafs jersey.

Paige Farries and Frederique Rajotte also played for the Maple Leafs in the Las Vegas Sevens tournament and Sara Kaljuvee was the captain of the U20 squad.

Arielle Dubissette-Borrice is the vice-captain and was also a silver medal winner with the Rugby World Cup Sevens Squad; teammate Julia Greenshields was a travelling reserve with that team as well.

With the goal being to provide elite level experience to players who have great potential this squad has a heavy focus on youth, but despite the abundance of youth there is experience on this roster that will inevitably be drawn upon during tournament play.
