RUGBY ONTARIO NAMES KEVIN JONES HEAD COACH
OF SENIOR WOMEN’S PROVINCIAL SIDE

(TORONTO, ON) – Rugby Ontario is proud to announce that Kevin Jones has been selected as the head coach of Ontario’s senior women’s provincial rugby team, the Ontario Storm.

Jones, a former head coach of the Canadian national senior women’s team, has a rugby resumé that boasts more than 34 years worth of coaching experience. On top of guiding the Canadian women to a best-ever fourth-place finish at the 1998 Women’s Rugby World Cup, Jones’ national rugby coaching career is also highlighted by stints as head coach of the Canadian U19 and U20 women’s sides.

At the provincial level, Jones has served as the head coach of numerous men’s and women’s provincial teams. The 2007 Rugby Ontario Hall of Fame inductee has also coached many Ontario club sides, most recently serving as an assistant coach of the Aurora Barbarians’ senior women’s team.

Jones will be inheriting an Ontario team that has known nothing but success in domestic competition; the Storm have finished as either champions or runners-up at the annual Rugby Canada National Women’s League Championships since the tournament’s creation in 2007.

The Storm ended the 2013 NWL Championships as tournament runners-up, one place behind competition victors Quebec. Ontario finished with an identical tournament record as Quebec – each side had two wins and one loss – however, the Storm earned one less bonus point than the ladies from La Belle Province, and settled for second place.

Jones is determined to build on last year’s narrow championship miss, and is inspired to try to take the team back to the top of the NWL podium.

“I’m very excited to be working with the Ontario provincial women's squad in preparation for the 2014 National Championship,” said Jones. “Ontario has performed well throughout every year of the competition, and I’d like to help the Storm keep up the tradition of excellence they've become known for.”

Despite Ontario’s impressive track record at the NWL Championships, Jones says that improvement is a must, as the tournament’s competition level improves each year.

“I expect that the other provinces will be putting their best foot forward and will prepare their squads accordingly to win the national title,” he added. “With that in mind, the goal is always to prepare to win this event, to put the players on the field and to see what happens, as Ontario’s talent is there to win it."

Ontario will host the 2014 NWL Championships, which will be held at Ottawa’s Twin Elm Rugby Park, Eastern Ontario’s premier rugby facility, between July 29 and Aug. 3, 2014.

Rugby Ontario will be working directly with the Eastern Ontario Rugby Union to work out all of the logistics surrounding the 2014 NWL Championship, and to deliver these games.
