Rugby Canada National Academy Overview
Rugby Canada, through the IRB, provides funding for regional Academies for male athletes aged 16 – 20 to train and compete to reach the highest levels of rugby. These regional Academies are based in British Columbia, Alberta (Prairies), Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic. Mike Shelley, Rugby Canada U20 Coach and National Academy Manager, has stated the focus of these Academies are to ensure that athletes with the potential to represent Canada receive training that will prepare them with respect to technical, tactical, physical, mental and lifestyle skills.
Rugby Canada National Academy – Ontario
Through partnerships with the University of Toronto and Kanama High Performance and by utilizing Ontario based Rugby Canada coaches, this Academy has access to top facilities and coaches in order to prepare athletes to represent Canada.
Squad members who live outside of the GTA visit Kanama High Performance during squad meetings for physical assessment and training on lifting technique.
GTA Squad members train at Kanama High Performance twice per week.
