  • Sixteen (16 - 8 male 8 female) Ontario coaches will be selected through a formal application process lead by Rugby Ontario Technical Director from four (4) regional areas
    • South Western Ontario
    • Niagara Region
    • Toronto Region 
    • Eastern Ontario 

  • Target ability / experience for coaches will be:
    • NCCP Introduction to Competition Certified (coaches who are trained with high level of Sevens experience will be considered and worked with to complete certification prior to working with athletes) or equivalent    
    • Sound knowledge of Sevens technically and tactically
    • 2 years of coaching at Train to Train and/or Train to Compete stages of the LTRD
    • A desire to progress high performance Sevens

    HIGHWAY TO HIGH PERFORMANCE 7’S COACH

    Job Description 

    Highway to High Performance” program is designed to develop 16 Rugby Sevens Ontario High Performance Coaches (6 male and 6 female) whose responsibility will be to expand the talent pool of 16 – 17 year old male and female Ontario 7’s athletes by holding talent identification camps in regional centres then ultimately selecting the best Ontario athletes to high performance academy teams that will compete at 2012 Ontario Summer Games and begin their pathway towards 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto and 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

    The assigned persons will perform the role of Coach of the Rugby Ontario Highway to High Performance 7’s Coach that participate in the August 2012 Ontario Summer Games in Toronto. The role will be viewed as being an integral and significant element of the high performance player pathway process as outlined in Rugby Ontario 7’s Elite Player Pathway.

    The position will involve a commitment to aspects of 7’s high performance player development and talent identification.  This position will focus upon the progression of talent identified players from regional talent Identification camps as outlined in The Highway to High Performance Project Outline.

    The persons involved in this role will be required to coach, manage players, plan programs and manage high performance training sessions.  The Head Coach will be required to work co-operatively with, and incorporate the development requests of, the Rugby Ontario Staff and potentially the Canadian National Senior 7’s Team Coaches.
     

    The role will expect the coach to perform the following: 

    • Adhere to a Rugby Ontario’s talent identification process.
    • Plan, develop and initiate an on-going academy program for selected players
    • Liaise with the Technical Director on all policy and procedural expectations.
    • Monitor the performance of players.
    • Work cooperatively with Rugby Ontario Academy staff, Rugby Ontario Representative coaching staff and Technical Department on a regular and frequent basis.
    • Be a key leader in developing and promoting the Ontario Representative 7’s Rugby Vision.

     

    Reporting Structures

    This position reports to Rugby Ontario Technical Director and will be monitored by progressive performance reviews undertaken by the Technical Director.
     

    Selection Criteria

    • Certified Competition Introduction – required
    • High level performance analysis skills.
    • A personal Professional Development Plan that incorporates the person’s intent to pursue higher level learning and coaching accreditation accompanied by professional development via workshops, clinics, etc.
    • Evidence of recognition as a high profile person within the Rugby community (and preferably beyond) with an understanding of current best practice and a history of performing best practice (preferably recent best practice) as it applies to rugby coaching.
    • A thorough knowledge of developments in High Performance Rugby around the world.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of:
    • the structure and dynamics of high performance pathways in Canadian sport;
    • the needs of high performance athletes;
    • the factors that affect Ontario’s competitiveness nationally;  and,
    • trends in international high performance athlete and program management.
    • Knowledge of the development plans of Rugby Ontario and Rugby Canada are an asset.
    • Demonstrated evidence of an ability to understand, support and implement development plans.
    • A background that displays people management and people leadership skills and attributes.
    • Computer literacy especially with spreadsheets, word processing and power point presentations.
    • A record of working as a team member, as well as a history of performing in situations that require self leadership and initiative.
    • Evidence of recently upgraded accreditation, recent attendance at coaching  workshops or evidence  of  other forms of  continuing personal coach education
    • A background that displays excellent customer relations and workplace co-operation skills.
    • Demonstrated evidence of being able to influence others including an ability to build good relationships with others who may not be receptive to change.

     

    Selection Process

    The selection process will be managed by Rugby Ontario Technical Director.

     

    Guidelines for Applicants

    The appointed individual must be able to display an ability to work during periods of extended hours including weekends and evenings.  A driver’s license is essential.

    Applicants are to submit the names of three potential individuals who can report on the specified selection criteria.  At least two of these individuals must be able to comment in detail upon the applicant’s involvement in coaching and in particular be in a position to comment upon the applicant’s understanding of contemporary expectations of coaches as program managers and people managers.

    The selection emphasis will be based upon the applicant’s knowledge, skills and attributes to drive the culture of the Ontario 7’s performance into the future.  An applicant who promotes a future that pictures “more of the same” will not be appropriate.  The selection process will focus attention applicant’s ability to display the skills, knowledge and attributes that identify recent experiences that can offer direction that will ensure Ontario Rugby continues to be a leader amongst Canadian Rugby provinces.     

    This is an honorarium paid position and applicants must be a current resident of Canada.
