(OTTAWA, ON) – Ottawa Touch Rugby is a group based out of Eastern Ontario, providing a non-contact rugby alternative during the Spring, Fall and Winter seasons. The league benefits those looking to train during the offseason, get introduced to the game or continue to be involved, after their contact career has concluded.

Ottawa Touch Rugby draws from all Eastern Ontario Rugby Union clubs, as well as the local high schools and post-secondary teams in the region – from Old Boys & Gals (oldest is 73) down to U16 male and female players and everyone in between. They have over 500 participants who come through the Spring - Fall (FREE) Saturday morning touch rugby program and their Winter Touch Rugby League accommodates upwards of 144 participants.

“We started outdoor "drop-in" touch rugby in the summer of 2010, as we felt there was an absolute need to offer an alternative to contact rugby, in a fast and friendly social environment,” said Greg Thomas, Volunteer at Ottawa Touch Rugby.

The main goal for Ottawa Touch Rugby is to continue to increase their programming and help to develop the game. The drop-in sessions are officiated in order to keep the game flow similar to that of competitive rugby. This allows for easy transition from touch to contact and vice-versa.

Outdoor Spring - Fall sessions are "all-ages", all-comers welcome, including parents and their children. Through on-field coaching, new participants can learn from experienced players about fundamentals like executing tactical lines and catch-pass.

For more competitive play, the program will continue to develop "tournament" teams that in the past have attended touch tournaments in both Toronto as well as Montreal. Ottawa Touch Rugby also plans to also host a similar tournament in Ottawa in 2017, coinciding with Canada's 150th Birthday celebrations.

The success of the program can be attributed to the core of volunteers, referees, and coaches who continue to devote time and effort into the program.
