(Thunder Bay, ON) - This past weekend, there was a Try Rugby event hosted in Thunder Bay, Ontario at Lakehead University. Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) joined Rugby Ontario and Lakehead RFC Rugby Club in a day of learning and fun!
13 youth between the ages of 6-14 joined in on the fun at Lakehead University, as they learned basics about the sport of rugby, through games and activities. On top of the youth participants, there were also three NAN staff participants and 16 volunteers from Lakehead RFC. The volunteers from Lakehead were also trained as Rookie Rugby Instructors during the event.
Each participant went home with a rugby ball, courtesy of Lakehead RFC, as well as a Flag Forever T-shirt, courtesy of Rugby Ontario.
On top of this, Lakehead University has also joined Rugby Ontario's Flag Forever program. The Flag Forever program is designed to provide opportunities for participation in non-contact rugby beyond the minor level.
Rugby Ontario is extremely excited to see the growth of the game of rugby in the northern regions of Ontario and will continue to work with partners at the Nishnawbe Aski Nation and Lakehead University to make rugby more accessible to the Thunder Bay region.
