Advantage Rugby holds 2nd Annual High School Player Showcase

December 12, 2017

(AURORA,ON) - Advantage Rugby hosted an inaugural High School Player Showcase on Saturday December 9, 2017 at the Aurora Sports Dome. The second edition of the showcase was a big success, with 32 participants (24 boys and 8 girls) - a 50 percent increase from the previous year.

Advantage Rugby is based out of Aurora its mandate is to develop youth rugby players in the York Region.

Athletes at the showcase ranged from students in grade 12 who are on the cusp of making decisions about which post-secondary institution to attend to students in grade 9 and 10, who are interested in rugby and where it might take them. While most of the players were from York Region there were young athletes who traveled from outside the region to demonstrate their talents in front of the coaches. The players were put through some simple pass-catch exercises and games to see how they handle a little pressure.

“Connecting prospective student athletes with varsity coaches is our goal for the showcase; we want kids to understand the development opportunities that exist and for coaches to be able to identify talented players” says Director of Rugby Development, Sandy Townsend.  "We are delighted to host the Showcase for high school rugby players across the province, connecting players with coaches and promoting the varsity development pathway is what this event is all about," added Townsend.

"The U Sports, OUA and OCAA are great development pathways for future national level talent and we want to identify student-athletes who are capable of playing at that level and get them into programs to best assist their progress," states Ryan Stickle, Advantage Rugby founder.

The event had interest from three community colleges (Seneca, Georgian and St. Lawrence) and four universities (Queen's, RMC, Trent, Waterloo and York).

Advantage Rugby would like to thank all the players and coaches that were able to attend.
