Round 1 of the OWL Cup Playoffs gets underway this weekend in Guelph and Markham

It’s that time of year! The Ontario Women’s (OWL) Cup will be starting this weekend. Four very strong teams are vying for their shot at the OWL Cup in the Guelph Redcoats, Toronto Saracens, Niagara Wasps and Aurora Barbarians. Keep reading for our previews of the first round matches.


Guelph Redcoats (West 1) V Aurora Barbarians (East 2) 

The Redcoats and Barbarians both are coming off convincing wins in their final games of the season. The Redcoats showed their championship pedigree by beating Waterloo County 100-0 in dominant fashion. The Aurora Barbarians showed they are the dark horse coming in the OWL Cup playoffs with a 74 -21 win over the Toronto Saracens in the last week of the season. The last time Guelph and Aurora met was July 7, 2018 with Guelph taking that match by a score of 55-36.

Toronto Saracens (East 1) V Niagara Wasps (West 2)

The Toronto Saracens are looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season by punching their ticket to the OWL Cup. The Niagara Wasps are looking to have a better showing this week as they also ended on a low note, losing their final match to the Redcoats by a score of 66-7. Last time the Saracens and Wasps met was on July 7, 2018. The Toronto Saracens beat Niagara in a dominant performance by a score of 67-12.

OWL Cup Day – August 18, 2018 at Fletcher’s Fields

The OWL Cup will take place on August 18, 2018 at Fletcher’s Fields. This year’s event will include a Cup Final match, as well as a Bronze Medal match. A schedule of the day will be determined next week and communicated. The OWL Cup Final will be streamed at www.youtube.com/RugbyOntarioTV.

Intermediate Cup

The Intermediate Cup also kicks off this weekend as top teams from branch leagues compete with bottom seed teams from the Ontario Women's League. Brantford Harlequins will face Waterloo County in attempt to play in the OWL West. The Crusaders will face Markham Irish in attempt to book a spot in the OWL East.
