OWL Cup and U19 Junior Cup highlighted jam-packed rugby weekend

(MARKHAM, ON) - It was a busy day of rugby at Fletcher's Fields in Markham, Ontario this past Saturday with the Ontario Women's League (OWL) Cup Day and Under 19 Junior Cup Day. Also taking place at Fletcher's Fields were Marshall League Playoff matches and the Toronto Rugby Union (TRU) Women's Championships (Congratulations to Balmy Beach). The Toronto Saracens' OWL Cup win over the Guelph Redcoats - marking their second provincial championship in a row - capped off the day, while Oshawa Vikings and Barrie RFC were crowned Under 19 Men's and Under 19 Women's Champions, respectively.

Congratulations to all the winners on the day. It was a great day of rugby at Fletcher's Fields!

Rugby Ontario's OWL Cup Day

-OWL 2 Cup-

The OWL Cup festivities kicked off with the OWL 2 Championship between the Guardian Angels and the Toronto Saracens. The Guardian Angels were able to come away with a 39-17 win over the Toronto Saracens seconds team. The Guardian Angels are a newly formed team (affiliated with the Aurora Barbarians), comprised of many female players who have represented various other clubs in Ontario. The team's goal is to give women the opportunity to continue to play rugby, even with family, work or other commitments.

-OWL Cup Bronze-

In the OWL Cup Bronze Medal match, the Aurora Barbarians and Niagara faced off for third place in the OWL Playoffs. The Aurora Barbarians defeated Niagara 76-5 to claim third place honours.

-OWL Cup Final-

The OWL Cup final saw the Toronto Saracens and Guelph Redcoats meet. The Toronto Saracens are far too familiar with the OWL Cup, winning most recently in 2017. Guelph, on the other hand, has not been in an OWL Cup final before, but their roster included some star-studded players with various experiences at the national, provincial and university level.

The Saracens opened things up, with Irene Patrinos and Natasha Smith both scoring early on in the contest. Patrinos converted one of the two tries, bringing Toronto's lead to 12-0.

The Redcoats were able to get two tries themselves from Emily Samek and Julia Schell to tie things up at 12, before scrum-half Lori Joesphson scored after extensive pressure to give Guelph their only lead of the game at 19-12.

Before the half, the Saracens added three tries to give themselves a 29-19 lead after 40 minutes. They did not stop there, scoring three more tries in the second frame. The Redcoats matched the Saracens' three tries in the second, but it wasn't enough to come back in this one.

The Toronto Saracens were crowned OWL Cup Champions in a thriller, winning by a score of 46-36. The win marks the Saracens' third-ever OWL Cup. With the league championship and the OWL Cup victory, Toronto completes the double for the second year in a row.
