PETERBOROUGH ON - KAWARTHA PINE RIDGE DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD ANNUAL FLAG RUGBY TOURNAMENT

On November 1st, 2018 the Kawartha Pine Ridge Elementary Athletics Association (KPREAA) held the final Flag Rugby Tournament of the Fall season at Fleming College in Peterborough, ON. The Fall season included 7 tournaments and over 160 teams from the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (KPRDSB).

Ed Holton, teacher at Rodger Nelson Elementary School and coordinator of the Flag Rugby competition for KPREAA built the now established program from nearly nothing. Ed started rugby 7 years ago as an instructional day for teachers and students, now there are over 2000 grade 7 and 8 rugby players in the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. “The school boards athletic association made a decision to mimic some of the sports offered in High Schools and offer them in elementary school,” said Ed, also a member of the local Peterborough Pagans Rugby Club “I put my hand up to run the rugby program and it has grown since then.”

The program has grown so large that 7 regional tournaments within the school board is necessary to ensure all teams have the opportunity to play. The final day included 32 teams, each representing one of four regions; Brighton (east), Port Hope/ Cobourg  (south), Bowmanville  (west), and Peterborough (north).

The event was also attended by representatives of local rugby clubs including; Lindsay RFC, Cobourg Saxons RFC and Peterborough Pagans RFC who participated as organizers, coaches and referees on the day. “It is great to see local clubs support school rugby programs, without their passion, knowledge and support events like these wouldn’t be possible,” said Ryan Jones of Rugby Ontario “Ed Holton has done a fantastic job growing this program and the Peterborough rugby club have seen the benefits by becoming one of the largest youth rugby clubs in the province.”

Next year the KPREAA hopes to expand the Flag Rugby program further north and offer more opportunity for more players to play more games.
