Ontario Jr. Blues Winter Program Combine

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 23rd, 2019

(WHITBY, ON)-This past Saturday, January 19th, The Ontario Jr. Blues Program held Combine #2 of its Provincial Winter Program. With over 200 athletes in attendance at the Whitby dome, athletes were put through a variety of tests conducted by Kris Robertson of Rugby Canada, as well as Sean Harrison and Jeff Watson of Elite Training System (ETS). The second of three combines, this weekend’s session represented the opportunity for athletes to demonstrate their growth and improvement since establishing their baseline at combine #1 in November.

On top of the "physical" testing, each age grade program also worked with their respective provincial and guest coaches as we introduced game play concepts:

- Attack Off #9

- Introduction to Defensive Shape and Pattern.

Many of the core skill concepts that athletes have been working on over the last two months were integrated into game play shape. Special thanks to members of the Ontario Senior Women's Program who worked with our U16 and U18 Women's teams.

To wrap up each team session, Rolf Wagschal (Game Plan Advisor/Mental Performance Consultant) Canadian Sports Institute of Ontario discussed with our athletes the power of "Goal Setting" in their daily training environment in an effort to maximize their potential. We look forward to Rolf working with our athletes in future winter sessions and during our competition season.

The combine also provided a valuable opportunity for provincial coaches to meet and discuss the summer ahead. With two breakout sessions held in the morning and afternoon, provincial coaches were able to engage in meaningful discussion and planning for the 2019 XV seasons. Discussion points included: development of a positive learning environment for athletes, development of complete players, process vs outcome, and strategies for player/coach review processes.

Awesome day! Rugby Ontario looks forward to our next Regional Core Skill Session as we break out in Ottawa, Guelph and Whitby during the first weekend of February.
