OWL Cup Round One Preview

(WHITBY, ON) - After ten weeks of high-level competition, the 2019 Ontario Women’s League Cup has been set! The Toronto Saracens finished in top spot in the East Division, with a record of 8-2-0 and a total of 43 points. In the West, the Brantford Harlequins secured first place in the division, with a record of 8-2-0, they tallied 41 points during the regular season. By virtue of finishing in the top spots in the respective divisions, both clubs have earned a bye into the second round of the OWL Cup. Toronto Nomads (East Seed #3) vs. Guelph Redcoats (West Seed #2)

The Toronto Nomads finished third in the East Division, compiling a record of 4-6-0 and earning 22 points. Despite the losing record, the Nomads enter the post season on a three-match winning streak. One of those victories came against their round one opponents, the Guelph Redcoats. In Round 8, the Nomads made the trip to Guelph and came away with a 45-26 win, scoring seven tries in the victory. The Nomads will look to grab another win on the Redcoats home pitch and move on to round two.

The Redcoats finished their 2019 campaign with a record of 7-3-0, racking up 39 points finishing only two points behind Brantford for second place in the West. Guelph were the only team in the OWL to earn victories over the two top seeds, the Brantford Harlequins and the Toronto Saracens, during the regular season. The Redcoats will be eager to avenge the Round 8 loss to the Nomads and earn a birth in the OWL Semi - Finals. 

 Niagara Wasps (West Seed #3) vs. Aurora Barbarians (East Seed #2)

The Niagara Wasps secured the third seed in the West Division with a record of 3-7-0, earning 16 points. The Wasps enter the post season having played the Harlequins and the Saracens the past two weeks, giving them quality game time against the two best sides in the League. Niagara and Aurora met in Round 8 of league play, with the Barbs coming out on top 36-10.

The Barbarians come into the OWL Cup fresh of a thrilling victory over the three-time defending OWL Cup Champions, the Toronto Saracens. Aurora won the match 34-30, giving them a big boost heading into the final stretch of the season. The Barbs compiled a record of 7-3-0 during the regular season, earning 35 points. Aurora will aim to take care of business at home against the Wasps and continue their quest to win the OWL Cup for the first time since 2016.

The OWL Cup Finals will take place on August 17th at Fletcher’s Field.

The Ontario Blues program is the high performance representative program for male and female rugby players in Ontario. Rugby Ontario is represented at the provincial level by the Ontario Blues. The program includes representative teams from Under-15 to Senior in both Women’s and Men’s Fifteens and Under-18 Men's and Women's Sevens. Specifically, the program is designed to develop and showcase rugby players for Canadian representative national teams.
