OWL Cup Day 2019

August 22nd, 2019

(MARKHAM, ON) -  Saturday, August 17th, was OWL Cup Day 2019 at Fletcher's Fields! The event featured four matches, including the OWL Cup Final! The final featured a matchup between the Guelph Redcoats and the Brantford Harlequins. In the first half, the Harlequins took control of the match and headed into half time with a 33-21 lead. The second half of the match was a different story. The Redcoats dominated play from the kick-off, winning the match by a score of 60-33. Congratulations to the Redcoats on their 2019 OWL Cup victory and to the Brantford Harlequins on a successful season!

"The Ontario Women’s League Final was an awe-inspiring competition marked by incredible athleticism, talent and drive" said Kathleen McGinn, Chair of the Rugby Ontario Board of Directors. " The women competing at this level are a force to be reckoned with and a true example of leadership for the younger generation.”

The first match of the day saw the Oshawa Vikings defeat the Toronto Scottish 41-17 in the second leg of the Intermediate Cup. With the victory, the Vikings won the Intermediate Cup 63 - 43 on aggregate, earning promotion to the OWL for the 2020 season! Rugby Ontario looks forward to having the Vikings participate in the Provincial League for the first time, in no small way due to the excellent female youth programs the Club has developed over recent seasons.

The OWL 2 Cup match between the Toronto Saracens and the Aurora Barbarians Guardian Angels was closely contested, with the teams trading the lead throughout the match. When the final whistle blew, the Saracens came out on top 35-34, winning the OWL 2 Cup in a thriller!

The OWL Bronze Medal match was between the Toronto Saracens and the Aurora Barbarians. The Saracens, who finished top of the table in the OWL during the regular season, defeated the Barbarians 45-17 to win the OWL Bronze Medal.
