Rugby Ontario Junior Season Comes To A Close

August 31st, 2019

(WHITBY, ON) - Rugby Ontario’s 2019 Junior Rugby season has officially wrapped up. Over the course of the month of August, numerous Junior League competitions took place to determine the Provincial Champions at each age grade. Along with the Junior Leagues finishing, a U13 Wrap-Up Day took place in conjunction with OWL Cup Day on August 17th.

 On Junior Cup Day and U13 Wrap-Up day, Rugby Ontario ran raffles for Gilbert tackle bags. Rugby Ontario would like to thank Gilbert and Rugby Canada for providing the tackle bags and would like to congratulate the winning clubs!

U19 Girls Provincial Championship

The first Provincial Championship of 2019 was the U19 Girls Championship. The four-team tournament was held on August 10th at Fletcher’s Fields. The teams competing for the Championship were the Ajax Wanderers, Barrie RFC, Fergus Highland RFC and the Oshawa Vikings. 

In the semi-final round, the Vikings defeated Fergus 37-0, while Barrie RFC beat Ajax 47-0, setting up a Barrie v. Oshawa Final.

The Championship match was a back and forth affair, with each team grabbing momentum throughout the game. After 80 minutes, Barrie came out on top, winning the match by a score of 32-17. Congratulations to Barrie on their 2nd consecutive U19 Girls Championship victory and to Oshawa on their Silver Medal!

In the 3rd place game, Ajax topped Fergus 24-17 in a match that came down to the last play of the game! Congratulations to both clubs on a successful 2019 season!

U13 Wrap-Up Day

On Saturday, August 17th, 30 U13 teams from across the province travelled to Fletcher’s Fields to participate in a wrap-up day event. Each team played 2-3 matches on the day, with the goal of getting players as much live game-time as possible. “It was a great day to showcase U13 rugby from all areas of the province” said Mark Kellington, Competitions and Events Coordinator with Rugby Ontario. “It was fantastic to see teams from every region come to celebrate the season together.”

U19 Boys Championship

The U19 Boys Provincial Championship was held at Thompson Park in Oshawa on Sunday, August 18th. The Aurora Barbarians, Burlington Centaurs, Crusaders Rugby Club and Toronto Saracens were all competing to be crowned Provincial Champions. 

The Crusaders defeated the Aurora Barbarians 17 - 0 in the first Semi-Final to secure their spot in the Championship match. The other Semi-Final game saw Burlington grab a win over the Toronto Saracens 24 - 17, setting up a Crusaders v. Centaurs final.

In the Championship match, the Crusaders were in control from the opening kick-off, winning the game by a score of 45-0. Congratulations to the Crusaders on their U19 Boys Provincial Championship! Congratulations also to the Burlington Centaurs on their Silver Medal.

Junior Cup Day (U15 & U17 Girls and Boys)

Junior Cup day 2019 was held at Fletcher’s Fields on Sunday, August 25th. Eight teams in each age grade group for both Boys and Girls competed for the Provincial Championships. Teams qualified for the competition by winning their region or by receiving a wild card birth.

U17 Boys

The first championship of the day was the U17 Boys Final. The match was between the Crusaders Rugby Club and the Oshawa Vikings. Crusaders knocked off the top seeded Aurora Barbarians in the Semi-Finals, while the Vikings edged the Brantford Harlequins to earn a spot in the final. 

The final was a close game between two very skilled sides. Eventually, the Crusaders pulled away, defeating Oshawa 20-5, winning the U17 Boys Provincial Championship! Congratulations to the Crusaders on their victory and to Oshawa on a fantastic season.

In the Bronze Medal match, the Harlequins and the Barbs were tied 14-14 after regulation, needing kicks to decide a winner. Brantford won the tiebreaker and captured the Bronze Medal!

U17 Girls

The U17 Girls final featured a matchup between the Oshawa Vikings and the Aurora Barbarians. The two clubs were among the top four seeds heading into Junior Cup Day.  Oshawa knocked off the Toronto Saracens  in the Semi-Final while the Barbarians got past the Belleville Bulldogs to earn their place in the final. 

The Championship match featured a ton of skills and hard hits. In the end, the Aurora Barbarians emerged victorious, defeating the Vikings 27-5. Congratulations to the Barbarians on their 2019 U17 Girls Provincial Championship!

In the third place match, the Toronto Saracens defeated the Belleville Bulldogs 10-0 to win the Bronze Medal! 

1st: Aurora Barbarians

2nd: Oshawa Vikings

3rd: Toronto Saracens

U15 Boys 

In the U15 Boys division, the Championship match featured the Crusaders Rugby Club against the Ajax Wanderers.  Ajax beat Georgian Bay in their Semi-Final match. In the other Semi while the Crusaders defeated the Kingston Panthers. 

In the final, The Crusaders defeated the Ajax Wanderers 19-0 to win the championship for the second year in a row and giving the Crusaders Boys program their 3rd Provincial Championship of 2019. Congratulations to both teams on their successful seasons and a well-played final!

The Bronze Medal match was between the Kingston Panthers and the Georgian bay Titans. For the second time on the day, the teams were tied at the end of regulation and went to kicks to decide the match. In the end, the Kingston Panthers came out on top, winning the Bronze Medal!

U15 Girls

To finish the day, the U15 Girls division came down to a matchup between the Belleville Bulldogs and the Oshawa Vikings. The Bulldogs were the top ranked team heading into the tournament. The two clubs had already played each other twice during the regular regional season and met for a third time for the Provincial title. Belleville defeated North Halton RFC in their Semi-Final match, while Oshawa edged out London St. George to move on to the final. 

In the Championships match, Belleville went ahead early and were able to hold onto the lead. They defeated Oshawa 37-5 to win the Provincial Championship. Rugby Ontario would like to congratulate the Belleville Bulldogs on their victory! 

In the Bronze Medal match, the North Halton Highlander defeated London St. George 14-12.
