McCormick Cup Round Two Preview

September 27th, 2019

(WHITBY, ON) - It’s Round Two of the McCormick Cup competition! Below is a preview of the Round Two matchups for both pools. The McCormick Cup Championship match will take place on Saturday, October 19th at Fletcher’s Fields, as part of McCormick Cup Day. POOL A Round #2 Matchups

Waterloo County (H) v. Burlington Centaurs (A), Bluevale Collegiate, 3PM 

BYE: Markham Irish 

Waterloo County and the Burlington Centaurs finished 2nd and 3rd in the Marshall West Division, both going 10-4-0 during the regular season. Waterloo edged out Burlington by a single bonus point, finishing with 51 points to Burlingtons 50.

The Centaurs will look to put their Round One loss behind them and put a win on the board against Waterloo. The Centaurs fell 41-5 to the defending champions, the Markham Irish, during the opening weekend. 

Waterloo County open up their McCormick Cup campaign at home against a club they’ve had success against this year. Waterloo and Burlington met twice during the Marshall season, with County coming away with victories in both matchups. They defeated the Centaurs 41-25 in Round 2 of the Marshall season and squeezed out a 20-17 victory in Round 9. 

POOL B Round #2 Matchups

Balmy Beach (H) v. Brantford Harlequins (A), Tubs and Gee Gage, 3PM

Balmy Beach will look to get back on track at home after a loss in Round One. The Beach were defeated by the Toronto Scottish 51-12 at Fletcher’s Fields. It won’t get any easier for Balmy Beach as the get ready to host the top seeded Brantford Harlequins. However, the Beach were one of the only two clubs to beat the Harlequins during the Marshall season. They beat Brantford 47-24 in Round 4 of the Marshall season, the biggest loss of the year for the Harlequins

Brantford began their 2019 McCormick Cup campaign with a big victory over the Peterborough Pagans. The top seeded ‘Quins won the match by a score of 85-19. Their matchup against the Beach will be a rematch of the 2018 McCormick Cup Semi-Final, which the Harlequins won by a score of 44-14. 

Toronto Scottish (H) v. Peterborough Pagans (A), Fletcher’s Fields, 3PM 

The Toronto Scottish scored a victory over Balmy Beach to open up their McCormick Cup campaign and will look to continue their winning ways when the host the Peterborough Pagans at Fletcher’s Fields. The Scottish and the Pagans have played each other twice so far in 2019. Peterborough came away with a victory in the first matchup by a score of 17-12. It was a different story in the second meeting, with the Scottish winning the match 58-18.

Peterborough will look to put their Round 1 loss to the Brantford Harlequins behind them and grab a victory over their East Division rivals. The Pagans finished with 50 points after going 10-4-0 during the regular season. The Pagans posted a record of 3-4 on the road during the Marshall season.

The Ontario Blues program is the high performance representative program for male and female rugby players in Ontario. Rugby Ontario is represented at the provincial level by the Ontario Blues. The program includes representative teams from Under-15 to Senior in both Women’s and Men’s Fifteens and Under-18 Men's and Women's Sevens. Specifically, the program is designed to develop and showcase rugby players for Canadian representative national teams.
