Senior Men's Weekend Preview

October 4th, 2019

(WHITBY, ON) -   It's Senior Men's Rugby Championship Season!  Pool play will end this weekend and the Cup Final matchups for each competition will be set. All Cup Final matches will be played on Saturday, October 19th, 2019 at Fletcher's Fields as part of McCormick Cup Day.  Join Rugby Ontario at Fletcher's Fields for a super rugby day! If you are unable to attend, the McCormick Cup Final will be stream on the Rugby Ontario YouTube Channel! 

 

McCormick Cup

Markham Irish (H) v. Waterloo County (A), Fletcher’s Field, 3PM

Brantford Harlequins (H) v. Toronto Scottish (A), Harlequins RFC, 3PM

Peterborough Pagans. (H) v. Balmy Beach (A), Nicholls Oval, 1PM

In the McCormick Cup, Pool A is lead by the Markham Irish. With a win this upcoming weekend, the Irish will secure a second straight trip to the McCormick Cup Final! The other two teams in the pool, Waterloo County and the Burlington Centaurs, met this past weekend, with Burlington coming away with a 29-26 victory. The Markham Irish will take on Waterloo in their final pool game.

In Pool B, the Toronto Scottish and the Brantford Harlequins are set to battle in a winner take all match. The two clubs are both 2-0 in pool play so far. The winner of their matchup on October 5th will earn a spot in the McCormick Cup Final. For Brantford, it would be the club's fourth straight appearance in the Championship match. The other two clubs in Pool B, Balmy Beach and Peterborough, will play their final pool match this weekend. They are both looking for their first win in the 2019 tournament.

Fall Cup

Ajax Wanderers (H) v. London St. George (A), Ajax Wanderers, 3PM

Barrie RFC (H) v. Lindsay RFC (A), Jim Hamilton Field, 3PM

The Fall Cup is also entering the final round of pool play. In Pool A, the Crusaders Rugby Club have clinched a spot in the Fall Cup Championship Match! The Cru defeated London St. George 24-10 in Round two to secure their spot in the finals. The Ajax Wanderers and London St. George will wrap up their seasons on October 5th when they face off in the last pool match. Both clubs are looking for their first win of the Fall Cup competition. 

In Pool B, Lindsay RFC gutted out a 24-23 win over the Toronto Nomads this past weekend, setting up a match against Barrie RFC for top spot in the pool. The winner of the match will meet the Crusaders in the Fall Cup Final. The two clubs have not played each other this year. Both clubs finished the Marshall season with 6-8-0 records.

Gee Gage Cup

Hamilton Hornets (H) v. Balmy Beach RFC (A), Mohawk SC, 1PM

Bay Street Pigs (H) v. Niagara Wasps (A), Sunnybrook Park, 1PM

Finally, in Round One of the Gee Gage Cup, the Toronto Scottish defeated the Niagara Wasps 31-10 to earn a place in the Gee Gage Cup Finals! In the other Round One match, Balmy Beach RFC topped the Bay Street Pigs 24-10, setting up a match up with the defending champions, the Hamilton Hornets. The winner of the Beach and Hornets match will meet the Scottish in the finals. The Bay Street Pigs and the Niagara Wasps will play a consolation final match this weekend. The two clubs have not played each other this season.

The Ontario Blues program is the high performance representative program for male and female rugby players in Ontario. Rugby Ontario is represented at the provincial level by the Ontario Blues. The program includes representative teams from Under-15 to Senior in both Women’s and Men’s Fifteens and Under-18 Men's and Women's Sevens. Specifically, the program is designed to develop and showcase rugby players for Canadian representative national teams.
