Fall Marshall Season Recap

October 26th, 2021

(WHITBY, ON) - On Saturday, October 23rd, the Rugby Ontario Fall Marshall Rugby season came to a close. Due to the impact that COVID-19 has had on the sport, Rugby Ontario and the Marshall clubs opted to forego the traditional McCormick Cup, Fall Cup, Gee Gage Cup or Intermediate Cup for 2021. Instead, 11 of the traditional sixteen Marshall clubs participated in a Fall Marshall competition. The clubs played games in two regional conferences for five weeks of conference competition beginning on September 11, 2021. A sixth week of competition, which was held this past Saturday, featured a series of crossover fixtures, and ultimately decided the Champion of the 2021 Fall Marshall Competition.

In the Championship Match, Balmy Beach Rugby Club faced off against the Oshawa Vikings. In conference play, Balmy Beach posted a record of 5-0, while the Vikings finished with a record of 4-0, setting up a fantastic final matchup. The Championship match was held at Tubs & Gee Gage field in front of a packed crowd. Both teams played well, but at the end of 80 minutes of play, Balmy Beach came out on top. The Beach defeated the Vikings 59-24 to capture the Fall Marshall Championship. Rugby Ontario would like to congratulate Balmy Beach on a well-earned victory. Furthermore, congratulations to both teams on a well-played Championship match!

The remaining clubs were matched up against one another for one last fixture of the season. In a match-up of the 2nd place teams, The Burlington Centaurs defeated the Markham Irish 27-10 at Sherwood Forest Park in Burlington. The Crusaders Rugby Club scored a 55-12 road win over London St. George. Finally, at Ellington Flats, the Toronto Scottish defeated the Toronto Nomads 26-6 to win the Stan Woodburn Cup, a historic trophy awarded to the winner of the match between the Scottish and Nomads.

Rugby Ontario would like to thank all the clubs who participated in the Fall Marshall Competition. We look forward to the 2022 Senior Rugby season!
