Club Community Spotlight: Caledon Cavaliers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 6th, 2022

(WHITBY, ON) - In the lead up to the 2022 season, Rugby Ontario is launching a new social media campaign titled “Community Spotlight”. The goal of the campaign is to highlight the many unique events and programs that member clubs delivered during the 2021 season and showcase them on the Rugby Ontario social media accounts and website! Today’s spotlight is on the Caledon Cavaliers!

What program/event are you nominating for the Community Spotlight?

We would like to nominate the Town of Caledon and the partnership with the Caledon Cavaliers RFC. The Town of Caledon has set a great example for wanting to help develop and grow grassroots Rugby in the community.

The Town of Caledon has put Five Caledon Cavaliers Coaches through the strict onboarding process to become official recreational program coaches who are each employed by the Town specifically to allow the Rookie Rugby program to be run and hosted by them.  They have also allowed Two volunteer positions to be generated under the guidance of the Town to help with the program. We have already completed one successful 8-week program that attracted 14 registrants. (Not bad for the first program). We are currently running the second program now and have attracted another 14 participants one of which is an inclusion participant who we are working in tandem with the Town who has also provided extra support staff to assist.

For the program's first run each Participant was given a mini–Gilbert Rugby Ball and boot bag with some stickers that were generously provided by Gilbert Canada for the Rookie Rugby participants.

The Caledon Cavaliers also provided participation certificates and a medal. See attached photos.

What are the details of the program/event?

The Town is running its second recreational Rookie Rugby Program aimed at attracting ages 5 to 12.  The program is coached by NCCP trained Coaches from the Caledon Cavaliers RFC.   The program runs each Saturday from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. Currently running the second 10-week program now.

Who is responsible for running the program/event?

The program is Run by the municipal recreational programming department See the registration link below. (Town of Caledon) and is managed by the Caledon Cavaliers RFC Coaches/Town of Caledon program Coaches.

What was the goal of the program/event?

To help bring awareness of the sport to the community while promoting the Rookie Rugby program and its many benefits.  The aim is to help develop a solid grassroots Rugby Program with the community and also to work with the Town to help get the program across other community centers throughout Caledon.  We also want to help get more coaches trained in the program so that it can be permanently run and offered by the Town with the support of the Caledon Cavaliers RFC.

How can people get involved and support the program/event?

Parents can register children ages 6 to 12 via the Town of Caledon recreation portal. We are also actively looking for anyone interested in pursuing a pathway into Coaching and will assist with making the connections with Rugby Ontario and with mentoring through the process.

Caledon Cavalier's programming will be open for registration very soon also.

Town of Caledon Councilor Tony Rosa asked to come and do a video on the program to help promote it in the community.  A familiar face in the video is Karen Chrobak who is also The Caledon Cavaliers Chief medical officer.  Considering only becoming a member club on October 24th 2021 our passion and desire to help develop grassroots Rugby within the community is already proving to be successful and having the Town of Caledon in your corner also helps.  Hoping that other municipalities will follow suit once they see what we are doing
