2022 Ontario Women's League Preview
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 2nd, 2022
(WHITBY, ON) - After a two-year absence, the Ontario Women’s League (OWL) is back! Rugby Ontario is thrilled to announce the OWL schedule for the 2022 season. 2022 will mark the first full Senior Women’s rugby season since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are thrilled for the return of senior women’s rugby competition in Ontario,” said Myles Spencer, CEO of Rugby Ontario. “It has been an incredibly long wait, but there is excitement building to see our clubs across the province back in action. On behalf of Rugby Ontario, I’d like to wish all teams, players, coaches and volunteers involved in the Ontario Women’s League, and all women’s competition, the very best for a safe and enjoyable season ahead.”
The league in 2022 will be made up of six clubs: Aurora Barbarians, Balmy Beach, Brantford Harlequins, Guelph Redcoats, Oshawa Vikings and the Toronto Nomads. The 1st XV for each club will compete in the OWL 1 league and the clubs with a 2nd XV will compete in the OWL 2. Clubs will face off against one another in a home and away format, with each league being a singular division.
The OWL regular season will kick off on May 14th and run for a total of ten rounds. After regular season play, the top four clubs of both leagues will qualify for the league playoffs and will play in the semi-final round. The winners of each set of semi-finals will face-off for the OWL Cup and OWL 2nds Cup on Saturday, August 20th at Fletcher’s Fields in Markham, ON.
“The return of the OWL and all the athletes that play in it, is such a great indication that summer rugby is back in full force!” said Mark Kellington, Manager, Competitions & Events for Rugby Ontario.
