OWL Cup & Marshall League Playoffs Preview

(WHITBY, ON) - After 10 rounds of competition, the Ontario Women’s League (OWL) and the Marshall League will enter the playoff rounds of their competitions. Both league playoffs begin this Saturday, August 13th. The OWL Cup Final will be played on Saturday, August 20th at Fletcher’s Fields. The Marshall League will crown a League Champion at the end of two playoff rounds. The results will determine the seeding for the McCormick Cup and Fall Cup.

OWL Cup Playoffs

In 2022, the OWL league consisted of six clubs competing for four playoff spots: The Aurora Barbarians, Balmy Beach, Brantford Harlequins, Guelph Redcoats, Oshawa Vikings and the Toronto Nomads. After 10 rounds of regular season competition, the 2019 OWL Cup Champions, the Guelph Redcoats finished top of the table with a perfect 10-0-0 record, accumulating 49 points. The second place Toronto Nomads finished with 39 points, posting a record of 7-0-3. Rounding out the top four were the Brantford Harlequins and the Aurora Barbarians who finished with 30 points and 25 points respectively.

The four clubs now advance to the playoff round. The post season matchups feature the top-seeded and defending champion Guelph Redcoats hosting the fourth-seeded Aurora Barbarians. In the other semi-final, the Brantford Harlequins will travel to take on the Toronto Nomads. The winner of each Semi-Final will advance to the OWL Cup Final, which will be held at Fletcher’s Field on Saturday, August 20th. Kickoff for the Cup Final will be at 3:30PM ET.

Marshall League Playoffs

For the 2022 season, the Marshall consisted of 16 clubs, divided into two conferences. Within each conference, the teams were divided into two regional divisions of four.

Conference A

North: Aurora Barbarians, Barrie RFC, Markham Irish, Toronto Scottish.

East: Ajax Wanderers, Balmy Beach, Oshawa Vikings Peterborough Pagans.

Conference B

South: Burlington Centaurs, Crusaders RFC, Toronto Nomads, Vaughan Yeoman.

West: Brantford Harlequins, Guelph Redcoats, London St. George, Waterloo County.

In the Marshall 1XV, Balmy Beach finished top of league and top of the East division with a record of 9-0-1 accumulating 45 points. The Brantford Harlequins also put up a record of 9-0-1, winning the West division with 44 points. In the North, the Toronto Scottish took home the division crown, going 8-1-1 and recording 42 points. Finally, in the South, the Burlington Centaurs finished on top with 41 points, accumulating a record of 8-0-2 over ten rounds.

The playoff matchups see the fourth-seeded Burlington Centaurs travel to face off against Balmy Beach. The other Semi-Final will match up the Toronto Scottish against the Brantford Harlequins. The 2nd XV for each club will also compete in semi-final matchups.

The other 12 Marshall clubs will compete in two rounds of playoffs as well, which will determine the rest of the seeding for the McCormick and Fall Cups.

Additionally, the clubs are still fighting for points for the Club Championship trophy. This trophy is awarded to the club who accumulates the highest number of points between both 1XV and 2XV, including regular season and playoffs.
