2023 Ontario Women's League Preview

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 9, 2023

(WHITBY, ON) -

The Ontario Women’s League (OWL) is back! Rugby Ontario is thrilled to announce the OWL schedule for the 2023 season.

After a six team league in 2022, the OWL has returned to an 8-team model in 2023. In collaboration with the eight clubs, a new structure has been adopted for the 2023 season. The league in 2023 will be made up of eight clubs: Aurora Barbarians, Brantford Harlequins, Guelph RFC, London St. Georges, Oshawa Vikings, Peterborough Pagans, Scarborough Aces and the Toronto Nomads. The 1st XV for each club will compete in the OWL 1 league and the clubs with a 2nd XV will compete in the OWL 2. Each league is a singular division, and the OWL regular season will kick off on May 13th. For the first 7 weeks, each team will play one another once. This includes OWL Day on May 27th at Fletchers Fields where all 8 clubs will be in one location together.

After those first seven games, the league is seeded into two pools: 1 to 4 and 5 to 8 based on standings up until that point. Rounds 8 and 9 will be re-seeding rounds, where clubs in each pool play one home and one away game versus similarly ranked teams with the chance of improving their seed for the OWL Cup Playoffs or trying to avoid participation in the Intermediate Cup.

After the re-seeding rounds the top 6 teams will compete in the OWL Cup. Teams ranked 7 and 8 will compete in a home and away with the loser playing the winner of TRU/NRU in a promotion relegation game on August 12th as part of OWL Cup Day.

“Rugby Ontario is delighted to welcome back the OWL League for 2023,” said John Hyland, Rugby Ontario Director, Rugby Operations. “The league is the pinnacle of our women's competition structure in Ontario, one where we will look to build around and bring rugby to the forefront of sport in Ontario moving forward. I want to wish the Clubs, players, coaches and match officials all the best for the season ahead.”
