Rugby In The Square 2023

On June 2nd, join two iconic Toronto landmarks, the CN Tower and the Toronto city sign, in partnership with Rugby In The Square, light up Toronto in yellow, the official worldwide colour of inclusion.

Rugby In The Square sets out to paint the town yellow in promoting rugby as a leader in equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility through sport around the region and around the world as Rugby enters its 200th year.

In the heart of Toronto, this flag Rugby event will include a diverse group of corporate teams and a Mixed Ability Showcase. Three turf pitches will be set up for 5 on 5 action in the middle of Nathan Phillips Square where a series of matches will be taking place throughout the live event to a final championship round followed by a team after-party. This is a one-of-its-kind event that promotes the philosophy of Mixed Ability Sport: diversity, social inclusion, equal opportunities, and access to healthy life-style choices for all. The Mixed Ability Showcase is in partnership with Abilities Centre and community clubs that are leading the introduction of Mixed Ability Rugby in Canada.

The event is co-hosted by Rugby Ontario and Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation (TIRF) and sponsored by PUMA Canada, Metro Supply Chain and Toronto Arrows. Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart Charities is the Program partner and the event will be hydrated by BioSteel.

Several TIRF and Team Canada Rugby Alumni will be at the event for media interviews. Hear their accounts of how rugby has impacted their lives.

RITS invites everyone to witness and participate in Rugby’s spirit of camaraderie and competitiveness while taking a leading role in representing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility in sport. RITS asks everyone to join in the celebration of these values by wearing the colour of yellow on June 2.

Promoting the event is a series of ads that will be seen around Toronto on billboards, in malls, residential and office buildings, online and in print. The ads reflect the values that the event and Rugby represent. Headlines like, “What happens on the pitch, needs to happen off the pitch” or “Watch courage triumph over doubt”. Social ads will ask the reader to “Turn Toronto the Good, into Toronto the yellow” or “On June 2, we paint this town yellow”.

The event is free for everyone to attend. Gameplay starts at 9 am with Opening Ceremonies at 10:20am and the Mixed Ability Showcase at 1:20pm.
