In light of recent air quality warnings across the province, we want to reshare Rugby Ontario’s Air Quality Guidelines so clubs can make informed decisions regarding the status of games. To prevent or limit outdoor sport participants’ exposure to air pollution, Rugby Ontario encourages club administrators, coaches, and team managers to consider the location and timing of events and activities in line with Ontario’s Air Quality Health Index (AQHI).

Rugby Ontario’s Air Quality Guidelines recommend the following:

  • AQHI 1-3 (low risk): proceed with full outdoor activity

  • AQHI 4-6 (moderate risk): modify outdoor activities

  • AQHI 7+ (high risk): outdoor activities are not recommended

Based on the guidelines, decisions to cancel or reschedule activities should be made by the host team/club in consultation with the opposing team/club(s) involved in the activity. All effort should be made to reach consensus to ensure the health and well-being of all participants. Cancellations due to air quality will not be penalized. If cancelled, the host club is required to inform Rugby Ontario and the relevant Match Official Appointer of the game rescheduling to ensure all relevant parties are made aware.
