Age-Grade Law Variations

Within Canada and Ontario, we have standard age-grade law variations (AGLVs) to provide a consistent set of age and stage-appropriate modifications to the game with a focus on enjoyment, player development, accessibility, and player welfare. These law variations are applied at all age-grade rugby competitions. Refer to the links below to read more about the specific variations for each age group and ensure that all program coaches are knowledgeable of their respective age category variations. These should also be shared with any local match officials and volunteers who may be acting as game managers at festivals.

Game On Global Guidelines

In 2022, following the COVID-19 pandemic, World Rugby launched the Game On Global community law variations. Game On provides member unions a set of guidelines for modification of the community game as needed to better support player welfare and accessibility needs across the world.

Rugby Ontario has identified specific leagues and categories where Game On Global modifications are to be used as required to reduce the frequency of defaulted games and keep people playing rugby in a safe and fun environment. The modifications apply primarily to Junior and Senior Branch and Regional Cup leagues. See the Grassroots Standards section below for more.

Refer to the link below to read more about the possible modifications.

Grassroots Standards

Rugby Ontario has created recommended program standards for each age category based on industry best practices. These can be found alongside a summary of all Ontario law variations and related policies for each category.
