Technical Game Leader Program

As part of the Rugby Development Network, in 2024, Rugby Ontario began a Technical Game Leader (TGL) pilot project aimed at supporting a foundation of rugby educators, informed coaches, and thriving programs. Targeted for minor, beginner introductions, and non-contact (T1) rugby, this three-phase project works to build innovative, world-class curriculum resources and train game leaders in coaching development throughout our entire education and development pathway.

While a large network of Game Leaders exists within the Rugby Ontario community, including coaches and match officials, there is minimal formalized training for these individuals. The TGL program works to remedy this by creating a workforce that trains Game Leaders into Technical Game Leaders through created curriculums, information sessions, and training experiences.

The initial phase of this program involved identifying initial Technical Game Leaders and beginning the process of building an extensive and informed curriculum. Using sources from around the world and determining areas of improvement, curriculum resources are currently being built for coaching development throughout Rugby Ontario’s entire education and development pathway; ensuring that the TGL program establishes a strong and world-class foundation.

This is a time-consuming undertaking; however, Rugby Ontario is now ready to proceed with the next phase of the TGL program: Resource Refinement and Pilot Projects. Outlined in the graphic below, the second phase of the TGL project will focus on training Game Leaders in time for the start of the minor season and potential school outreach projects.

If you are interested in getting involved with the TGL program, learning more about the project, or understanding what resources are available or being created, reach out to your club for additional information and to see their involvement.
