Flag Rugby Tournament Returns to Nathan Phillips Square

June 26th, 2019

(TORONTO, ON) Rugby Ontario and Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation (TIRF) are pleased to co-present Rugby in the Square. The fundraising event features a five-on-five co-ed flag rugby tournament for pre-registered corporate teams, a mixed abilities rugby showcase, an array of fun rugby-centered activities and onsite activations. Rugby in the Square 2019 will take place on Friday, July 5th, 2019 at Nathan Phillips Square.

“Rugby in the Square is an event that brings people from across our city together at Nathan Phillips Square to showcase and celebrate what Rugby is all about: camaraderie, community,  inclusivity and competitive spirit” said Kathleen McGinn, Chair of the Rugby Ontario Board of Directors.

“As Toronto’s only rugby-centered sport for development organization, we are grateful for the partnership with Rugby Ontario and the possibilities they provide the young people we serve,” said Amanda Neale-Robinson, Executive Director of Toronto Inner-City Rugby Foundation. “Rugby in the Square highlights that there is in fact space, and opportunity, for rugby to be included in Toronto’s inner-city sports landscape.”

Rugby in the Square’s fast-five flag rugby demonstrates the impact of physical literacy, fundamental movement skills, and Sport for Life’s Long-Term Athletic Development (LTAD). The rules of the game involve techniques and skills from: Rugby Union, Rugby 7s and Flag rugby. The event’s round-robin tournament invites pre-registered teams to play a minimum of three 20-minute games on synthetic turf provided by Synthetic Turf International – Toronto.  The top teams have the chance to compete for the tournament trophy, and year-long bragging rights.

The inaugural event in 2018 served as a platform to promote rugby, raise funds for the future champions of the sport and celebrate rugby in Ontario. The event featured 12 corporate teams, on-site activations, and a Mixed Abilities Showcase, the first of its kind in Canada. Eventi Capital took home the hardware in 2018 and will look to repeat their success in 2019.

This year, the event features three turfed playing surfaces, more corporate teams, mixed abilities showcase, a mid-day musical performance by Ferraro Music, along with an onsite beer garden and food vendors.

The Mixed Abilities Showcase has participants of the Abilities Centre’s Thrive Program, showing off their skills in an effort to promote social inclusion and equitable access to healthy lifestyle choices.

Rugby in the Square would not be possible without the support of our event partners. Rugby Ontario is pleased to announce that PUMA will be the official clothing sponsor of Rugby in the Square. “We at PUMA love the opportunity to be a part of such a great event and to help kids get active through Rugby" said Mark Edward, Director of Sales.

Thank you to PUMA, Synthetic Turf International – Toronto, Abilities Centre, Sportside Medical Services, Quinn’s Steakhouse & Irish Bar, Ferraro Music, Medallion Print Solutions Inc. and the City of Toronto, Gilbert Rugby Canada and Elite Training Systems.
